Frequently Asked Questions for our Intelligent Fibre Optic Link Systems

What is the level of Shielding Effectiveness

PPM cannot guarantee shielding effectiveness as the number of variables to take into account are countless. We have many satisfied customers in the automotive and military markets using modules in fields regularly exceeding 200V/m and even as high as 30kV/m. PPM would be happy to make demonstration equipment to prove performance in a particular application.

What is the maximum input level

The maximum input level for a Sentinel or Sentry transmitter is dependant on the gain setting.  Please see the chart below:

Gain Setting Maximum Input Damage Level
+33dB -30dBm 10dBm
+30dB -27dBm 10dBm
+27dB -24dBm 10dBm
+24dB -21dBm 10dBm
+21dB -18dBm 10dBm
+18dB -15dBm 13dBm
+15dB -12dBm 16dBm
+12dB -9dBm -18dBm
+9db -6dBm 18dBm
+6dB -3dBm 18dBm
+3dB 0dBm 18dBm
0dB 3dBm 18dBm
-3dB 6dBm 18dBm
-6dB 9dBm 20dBm
-9dB 12dBm 20dBm
-12dB 15dBm 20dBm
-15dB 18dBm 20dBm
-18dB 21dBm 22dBm
-21dB 24dBm 22dBm
-24dB 27dBm 24dBm

What is the minimum detectable signal

The minimum detectable signal is a function of the Noise Figure, we with point2point AC links.  The Sentinel and Sentry products also have preamplification built in to the transmit head.  With the maximum of 33dB gain selected the Noise Figure is less than 11dB.  Typical detectable signals levels are shown below for a NF of 11dB

Measurement BW  MDS dBm
1GHz  -73dBm
100MHz  -83dBm
10MHz  -93dBm
10kHz  -123dBm
1kHz  -133dBm
300Hz  -149dBm
1Hz  -163dBm

The calculation used to obtain the figures above is:
Minimum Detectable Signal = -174 + Noise Figure (NF) + 10log10 (MBW)

What are the NiHM Battery charge and discharge times

The NiHM Battery charge time @ 2A for the 3.6Ah battery is -<2 hours and the 2Ah battery is -<1 hours

The NiMH Battery discharge time for the 3.6Ah is 8 hours for the DC modules and 15 hours for the AC modules

The NiMH Battery discharge time for the 2Ah is 4 hours for the DC modules and 8 hours for the AC modules

Can measurements be taken from more than one input at a time?

No each input must be addresses serially. If you have more than one measuring receiver you might consider a second set of transmit and receive modules, or the inclusion of a point2point link. These can be added to the Sentinel and Sentry chassis with ease.

Does the System Controller remember all gain and impedance settings for each input and each transmit module?

Yes you only need to define the settings for each input once. The system then stores these settings and applies them each time a particular input is selected. Of course these settings can be changed at any time.

Is LXI supported?

At this time LXI is not supported by the Sentinel chassis.

Which components are interchangeable between point2point, Sentinel IIsc & Sentry IIsc?

    1. Mainframe – P/N SRK-3RP, SRK-3P
    2. NiMH Batteries – P/N 73511, 73512
    3. Legacy NiCD batteries – P/N 73476, 73477
