PPM Ltd Supplies bulk DC power to Diamond Light Source
PPM are proud to announce that the FPS series of AC/DC power supplies has been selected by Diamond Light Source, the UK’s new synchrotron science facility based in Oxfordshire to provide bulk power to a new superconducting Wiggler insertion device. Diamond is known as a third generation synchrotron light source, due to its use of specially designed arrays of magnets called insertion devices, which produce exceptionally bright light beams to suit a huge variety of complex experiments. The synchrotron produces X-rays, ultra violet and infra-red light all of which is used by researchers to probe the inner workings of biological systems and study materials at the atomic level. The FPS AC/DC power supply is required to provide efficient and reliable 500A DC at 12V. By configuring 8 FPS shuttles in parallel, a redundant configuration is achieved which allows “hot swapping” of modules, without interrupting the operation of the synchrotron machine. The complete system, capable of delivering over 500A with N+1 redundancy, only occupies a 3U high space in the system racking. Important factors in the selection of a suitable product were an easily maintained modular design, good efficiency and N+1 redundancy within a compact form factor. The final power supply provides 4x300A at up to 6V for a superconducting magnet system. The 12V output from the FPS power supplies feeds 4 custom digitally controlled switched mode regulated current sources, which also use an N+1 redundant and modular design. Output current is controlled to very high precision with an accuracy of 50ppm, a resolution of 3.8ppm and an 8 hour stability of 10ppm.
