point2point DC Link - PDT and PDR Obsolescence Information

PPM has been informed that a key component required in the point2point DC modules is no longer commercially available, with immediate effect. PPM have executed a last time buy of this component which we expect will support demand for repairs and service on all PDT and PDR part number modules for at least five years, but this depends on the usage of the obsolete component stock.

Unfortunately, there is no replacement for the component that is becoming obsolete, which has left PPM in the position of a complete product redesign for the point2point DC fibre optic link. The scope of this redesign will include several additional features and PPM will be launching this replacement DC coupled product during 2008. It is important to note that the new transmitters (Tx) and receivers (Rx) will NOT be compatible with the PDT and PDR series of modules that you already have. The mechanical form factor of both the rack mounted and shielded remote modules will be kept the same, but older Tx or Rx modules cannot be paired with the new Tx or Rx to make a functioning link.

As a contingency PPM have arranged enough component stock to cover expected new order demand of PDT and PDR modules into mid 2008. However, under these circumstances we are writing to all customers that have an installed base of PDT and PDR modules and ask that they consider a last time buy. After 1st February 2008 PPM will be unable to guarantee supply of PDT and PDR modules to the current design.
