Why use a point2point Fibre Optic Link

Fibre Optic Links have many advantages over conventional galvanic conducting cables such as coaxial cables, leading to their wide use in many applications. The main benefits include immunity to interference, very low loss and electrical isolation.

Most Fibre Optic links are application specific, for example a digital data link. These cannot easily be configured to carry generic electrical information. There are many applications where it would be beneficial if a coaxial cable could be directly replaced by a fibre optic link. In fact manyEMC test standards (for example DO-160, ED14, Def. Std. 59-41, IEC, CISPR and EN) recommend the use of fibre optic links to ensure isolation and signal integrity. There are also many other test and measurement applications that can be greatly enhanced by the use of fibre optic links
